My venerable Camper 760 does not like my new Mercedes motorhome and loses the satellite signal frequently. I am positive it is because of the heated windscreen acting like a Faraday cage and it’s preventing the signals to come through.

is there any way to boost the signal, or a way to allow it to function? My old Streetpilot 111 of 20+ years ago had an aerial that could be removed and an external aerial attached to it that sorted a similar problem I had.

Is there anything similar I could consider? Or is it a lost cause? The standard Merc satnav is crap by the way.

I am assuming that simply purchasing the latest version of Camper 780/790/whatever will result in the same issues?

I’d welcome your thoughts. Thanks.

I'm afraid that you have limited options, you may be able to find an area around the edge of the windscreen that is free from heating elements, maybe top centre next to reversing mirror, alternatively you may have to place the satnav on a side window (not convenient I know)

The screen is very well equipped with heating elements sadly. All is not lost though as I can also use my iPhone hooked up to CarPlay and then use Google maps, but it’s not as ideal as the 760 and as convenient to route.

in hindsight when I had a screen replaced under warranty last year I should have requested a cheaper clear version (maybe I’ll have a stone hit me and crack it?

When I used it last week it refused to lock in at all to anything.

I removed it from the unit and held it against a side window for a half hour and put it back in the cradle

It then worked perfectly for all the hour’s journey home.

So I will try that again next trip, from the start, and see how long it remains operating. Perhaps if it doesn’t know where it is from the startup then it will always have issues.

I’ll let you know

You could speed things up by temporarily placing the 760 outside the vehicle before a trip, this should only take 5 mins. or so

That is what I’m started to do. Firstly as the battery is always flat - presumably I need a new one - I charge it up for 15 minutes, then remove it from the cradle, stick it in a side window until it has locked on to satellites for 10 minutes or so. Then I’ll put it back in the cradle and all seems good until I next turn it off and back in again.

Are batteries replaceable at home? And available?

Yes it looks like the part you need is a 361-00066-00 battery, it's best to check what is installed in your unit to make sure you will be purchasing the right part, there is a video for instructions here :-

First of all confession time - I’m ham fisted.

I bought a battery and removal tool set from Germany. It took just a few days and arrived with no fuss.

Then I stepped in. I dismantled it easily using the correct tiny torx driver, then removed the battery carefully, and installed the new one. Sorted.

Not! I was distracted and managed to tear the ribbon cable. It’s now officially f**ked. It is dead. Kaput.

Can it be repaired for not a lot of money? If not then in the bin it will get dispatched. I have in the meantime time bought a new Garmin 895. So I’d repair t’other to give to my lad for his van.
