My unit was dead yesterday, and would not turn on, even with the external power cord connected. I found that I had to remove the battery, fire it up with external power, then replace the battery with the power on, then leave it on overnight to recharge the battery. (otherwise I got a "battery missing" message, even with the battery in). By the next morning, the unit was back to normal, with a fully charged battery, working well. The problem started as a result of not using or charging the unit for 4 months.
