Error updating maps

I've had a Garmin DriveSmart 61 for several years. I've updated maps many times with no problem.

But this time, trying to update it to NA 2026.20 maps, Garmin Express said there was an error during install, and I saw that the device had rebooted. When the Garmin was done rebooting, it said something to the effect that it had no maps.

I restarted both the computer and the Garmin. Now Garmin Express said the Garmin was up to date. I went into map options and told it to "Reinstall the map that is currently loaded on this device". It seemed to do so.

Now the Garmin can use the map. So I went into myMaps to verifiy that it had 2026.20, and found something very strange. It listed two maps (both checked) totally outside my area, and did not list any map for my area.

The maps it lists are:
-- "Western Alaska, Eastern Alaska, Aleutians West, AL"
-- "Houston South, Texas, Fresno, California, Bay Area"

I live in Bellevue, Washington state, near Seattle.

Two questions:
-- what can I do to get myMaps to list the map I actually have?
-- Are there any known examples of new addresses etc. in the 2026.20 map I can tell it to find to check whether 2026.20 is installed vs. the version I had before?

I suggest you install Garmin Basecamp, this free program can inspect the maps on your unit in great detail, you can also tell Garmin express to 'Install map to computer only', the new map will be visible to base camp and can be downloaded to your Drivesmart

Update Garmin Maps

The advantages of using Basecamp is that it has much better control using it's MAP INSTALL utility, this can examine both internal and microSD memory, examine existing maps, display free memory, delete old maps to make space for the new one and download all or part of the new map to your Drivesmart

Thanks, I downloaded the 2026.20 map to my hard drive.

But when I try to install it with basecamp, it says "This device already has your latest maps fully installed.".

Would it make sense to try to delete the old map files via Windows Explorer? Here's what it shows in the Map folder:

It's worse than I thought. I can no longer find destinations. I can go to saved locations and previously found, and it can go home. But it can't find a new destination.

Basecamp >> Install Map has a remove feature so that you can uninstall any maps currently found on your DriveSmart 61, this is safer that using Windows Explorer

I'm confused--if the feature has been removed, how would I be able to use it?

Basecamp can remove the maps for you, this feature has not been removed
