    Hi there.
I need some help to link my old software and new GPS together.
I’ve begun to use my old Fugawi UK Digital Maps Ver 2 software again.
This is because I was bought a nice new Garmin Etrex 20x.
I still have my old original Etrex (Yellow) and I was using it with a USB cable and software that made it work fine with the Fugawi. However the Fugawi won’t recognise my new 20x. I’ve tried using both Basecamp and GPS Babel to try and get the files over but they won’t seem to transfer.
The fugawi saves file in RTE!
Does anyone have any suggestions for a workaround?
Or can I fake a com port via a USB port?
Will Basecamp recognise my old Etrex via the USB Port.
Im not keen to throw away the Fugawi software as I like using it and I have bought all the maps for the UK worth £100
    Thanks from Bob.

    Could I ask a few questions :-
    1) What is contained in the RTE files you wish to transfer to your Etrex 20x?, I'm guessing it contains routes (tracks or Waypoints)
    2) Do the RTE files load into Basecamp?.
    3) Can the RTE files be converted using GPS Bable?
    4) What 'software' did you use with the old Etrex + USB cable and Fugawi software on computer / laptop?

I have found a Data Exchange Guide for Fugawi software, but it is for version 4.5 so it may not be applicable :-

Hi there and thanks for the reply.
    answers.
    1. Its routes.
    2. The RTE wont load.
    3. The mapping sofware is Fugawi UK Maps ver 2. I also used the driver that came with the USB cable bought from ebay.
The data exchange guide doesnt help for Ver 2 I think.

What im trying to do is get routes I make from Fugawi onto the new Etrex 20x.

I dont know if I can do this by...
    1. export from fugawi - convert with GPSbabel - import into Basecamp - import into the 20x.

Will basecamp sync with my old etrex?

Maybe I misunderstood what you are saying, I thought you were saying that you could transfer an RTE file generated by Fugawi containing a route and successfully transfer it to your old Etrex, but that the same procedure does not work with the new Etrex 20x. My question 3) was trying to determine whether you have managed to get GPS babel to accept the RTE file as a valid input file, if so it should be possible to convert the RTE track file into a GPX track file that Basecamp and your Etrex 20x will accept.

Can you upload an RTE file to this thread, if so I can have a go a using GPS babel on it.

No, basecamp won't work with GPSs with a serial COM port, see Garmin link here :-

Sorry the forum wont let me upload the RTE file.
GPSBabel states the file was successful and its there, but on import to Basecamp I cannot find it.

Ok. Ive managed to create a text file export from Fugawi.
Then convert this with GPSBabel as a gdb.
    It will import to Basecamp.
However I need now to know what information to add to the text file via Fugawi.

I would export just Latitude / Longitude to an RTE file and then convert that to a GPX file for Garmin Basecamp (rather than a GDB file) all the other fields can be calculated by Basecamp I think

I think ive just worked out how to add a file by creating it as a zip file on the forum.
Can you unzip this and give it a try.
This is the file that Fugawi ver 2 creates as an export.

    ESRI Shape file

I have had a look at your Test.RTE file but have not has much luck with it, all files GPS Babel files I have created with it are zero lenght i.e. an empty file, I can see the contents of the Test.RTE file using a hex viewer, the results are here :-
    hex-edit.jpg
but I can't see anything useful , it looks like there are possibly 8 waypoints that could form a route but GPS babel versions 1.5.0 and 1.5.2 don't seem to be able to do anything with it.

I would try to use the Fugawi Export >> text file option, at least then we should be able to read the output file and maybe get GPS babel to convert it, GPS babel does seem to be looking for a txt file when you select Fugawi as a input file type.

Could you upload a Fugawi text file (in a zip format) to this thread and then I can have another go at it

Hi there and thanks for all the efforts.
I can create a text file no problems. However before the text file is created it asks for the field you want to add as in the picture I added.
Which one's do you want me to add?

Just Latitude and Longitude (position) should do it

This is what Test2.txt contains :-

    Code:
    # Latitude, Longitude and UTM coordinates are in WGS84 datum
    #
    # Each record includes the following fields
    #
    # Latitude in decimal degrees (negative is south)
    # Longitude in decimal degrees (negative is west)
    53.4661538,-1.5430558
    53.4615582,-1.5400927
    53.4573377,-1.5411925
    53.4533787,-1.5401811
    53.4510412,-1.5400557
    53.4519091,-1.5320654
    53.4532395,-1.5275331
    53.4527806,-1.5251288
    53.4476476,-1.5227769
    53.4423618,-1.5272021
    53.4447160,-1.5315422
    53.4472521,-1.5364830
    53.4494233,-1.5400732
    53.4513264,-1.5441183
    53.4564544,-1.5452683
    53.4625756,-1.5476128

These 16 waypoints can form a route, however, I haven't managed to find a GPS babel setting yet that produces a working GPX

I have managed to create a track from the 16 waypoints above, however I did it by manually inserting the co-ordinates into Basecamp, as I still haven't found a way get GPS babel to do it, the closest I got was to get it to produce a GPX file with 6 false and 16 real waypoints, it looks like selecting Latitude and Longitude in Fufawi may not be enough as this only produces waypoints, i.e. 16 individual locations, it won't string them into a track.

Note the attached file isn't a zip file, it has just had '.zip' added to the end of the file name, to use it just edit the file name to remove the '.zip'

    Ive solved it!!!!!!

    here it is.
    1. create a route in Fugawi.
    2. I connected my old Etrex (yellow) to the PC and downloaded the route to the Etrex.
    3. I connect my Etrex (yellow) to the PC and opened EasyGPS and uploaded the route to EasyGPS.
    4. Connected the 20x to the PC and downloaded the route onto the 20x via EasyGPS.
    5. Route is now on the 20x. Phew!
