Garmin 3597LMTHD Remove Icons from Map

I'm on a long trip to Yukon and Alaska, and my Garmin 3597LMTHD started to malfunction. While troubleshooting, I think I returned to factory settings - at least my custom settings disappeared. The map display now includes icons for restaurants, lodging, etc., and I want to eliminate them. What should I do?

Go to Settings, Map & Vehicle, Map Layers, uncheck Places along the road.

Is there a way to switch off Garmin icons and leave custom POIs.

None of which I'm aware. I would like to know that too. Anyone??
