    Evening all

I have a UK version of the Etrex Vista approximately 3 years old with UK
    maps loaded.

I am hoping to go trekking in the US later on in the summer (Utah) and
wonder whether it is possible to temporarily load US maps for the
    duration of my visit.

Can anyone clarify whether this is possible and if so at what cost?

    TIA

    Need to clarify "temporary".

A UK version of the Vista would come with a European base-map. AFAIK, its
not possible to get alternative base-maps.

You may have loaded some additional maps ontop of that, probably from a
Garmin package. Provided you have the package, these can be re-loaded when
    you get back.

The US maps will need to be purchased from Garmin (or you'll have to search
out public domain alternatives, they exist for some parts of the world).
These are loaded using MapSource (from Garmin, part of the map software).
You have 24Mb of memory in the device to load map components (or if in
possession of a computer, can re-load different maps at different times).
Something like this package might be what you want:

    Hi Nigel

Unfortunately it sounds like what I wanted is not possible ie to change
the base-maps temporarily to the US ones and then revert to the UK on my
    return.

    Cheers

    Hi:
as suggested by Nigel you can load maps on top of the base map.

    Try this for maps:

    http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/ (public domain)

and for loading the maps into the receiver you will need a software called
IMG2GPS, which you could find at:

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mdipol/img2gps/ (public domain)

I have found very detailed maps of Venezuela and loaded them with IMG2GPS
    after a few tries.

You don't have to load all the maps at once.

After a bit of disappointment with getting the signal of sats, my admiration
for the capabilities of the Garmin Etrex Legend grows by the day.

If in doubt send me an e-mail to: juanvazquezd at googlemail.
