Have an elderly Garmin GPS 126 I would like to be able to upload gpx waypoints and routes to. Installed on sailboat with ftdi serial to usb cable between laptop and unit.

Presently using OpenCPN on the laptop with a linux (Navigatrix/Upuntu 14.04.1 gps 126LTI) o/s. With unit set in NMEA/NMEA mode, laptop receives position info ok either via GPSD network port, or /dev/ttyUSB0 virtual serial port. Any attempt to switch to GRMN/GRMN mode stops any data transfer.

Would really like to be able to upload waypoints/routes as plotted in OpenCPN to the 126...
Easy to export info as valid gpx file, so not married to using OpenCPN as transfer agent. Have tried using EasyGps (unable to connect to port) and several other windows based programs installed under WINE with no joy...

Leaving on 1300 mile trip soon, and a lot of routes/waypoints to enter into the unit manually (and the inevitable entry errors) plus would like to be able to download tracks as well but can only see how to do that in GRMN/GRMN mode. Am running hockey puck gps rcvr on the laptop (not at the same time) so could grab tracks off that, but would like to be able to shut down the laptop except when it's actually needed. Minimal power available onboard while underway so everybit helps.

Any suggestions as to native linux setups to upload/download from this old receiver or other workarounds appreciated.

    TIA and regards,
