I've recently bought a GPSMap 78SC for marine use and it came equipped with an excellent range of charts - but no land maps. When I enquired I was told that they would be extra but that I could buy a sim card (for $179) with the relevant land maps loaded, and to use the land maps I would need to replace my sim card.

What?

The sim card is installed in the battery compartment, below the batteries. So to drive to the boat ramp I need to remove the GPS batteries and install the land maps sim card. Then at the boat ramp I have to remove the batteries again and install the chart sim.

Surely this can't be the correct procedure, can someone enlighten me with a more practical solution.

Using Garmin Basecamp you can examine the microSD in the 78SC and determin how much memory is free on it, you can probably add smaller maps to this existing microSD, free Open Street Maps can be added to Basecamp and then sections of the maps could be downloaded to the existing microSD card

Another possibility is copying your marine maps to a larger capacity microSD card so that there is more space for additional maps, however this may not be possible, because some Garmin supplied maps will be made inaccessible if they are copied to a new microSD card, it worth trying though

That's very good advice. I checked my sim card online to find it has 2.6 GB free space so now I'll see if I can add any extra maps.
