Installed portable my nuvi 2595 gps in my truck today and it worked well after I programed a destination and on returning home plugged it in to the power outlet in the truck and after a few seconds the screen went dark. Unplugging the rear power connector the screen lit up and came on as normal.

Took the gps to my basement workbench and applied an external 12 volt power supply to the power plug and did the same thing, when applying the 12v power the screen it just goes dark. The strange thing is when when shining a light to the screen you can just see the shadow of the normal display behind, it's just not being backlit.

This unit is not well used and is in good condition and has always worked well and is kept in a special protective case.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Your unit runs on a 5 volt DC supply, the cigarette adapter used in a vehicle converts 12 / 24 Volts into 5 Volts DC before feeding this lower voltage into the satnav via the USB connector on your unit, I think the adaptor may be faulty, it should be outputting 5 Volts DC, in order to test the 2595's USB input you can connect a USB cable from your unit directly to a USB connector on a computer or a mains to USB power unit, they will both supply 5 Volts DC to your satnav

Very interesting, the only way I know to connect 12v to the gps is to cut the plug off and locate the wires and connect 12v, if your lucky you don't blow the gps up. As mentioned in the op, the unit was plugged into the power outlet in the truck therefore has to be using the, as you call it, the cigarette adapter.

My problem is when Installed the gps in my truck it worked well and after I programed a destination on returning home plugged it in to the power outlet in the truck and after a few seconds the screen went dark. Unplugging the power connector the screen lit up and came on as normal.

Thanks for any suggestions on what the problem could be.

YOU MUST NOT CUT THE PLUG OFF, the plug converts 12 / 24 Volts to 5 Volts, if you cut the plug off and connect 12 Volts to the bare wires you will be feeding 12 Volts into the satnav's USB socket, THIS WILL DESTROY THE SATNAV

DO NOT SUPPLY THE SATNAV DIRECTLY WITH 12 VOLTS

Take a look at the label on the 'plug' OUTPUT 5V DC

Where on earth did you get the idea I would even think of cutting the plug off.
You obviously didn't read the original post and my second either. Your off on some tangent that you would even think that I would connect 12v directly into the gps via a cut of plug.

English probably second language and because now it's been read incorrectly going to be impossible to resolve this problem everyone that reads this is jumping to the incorrect conclusion I cut the friggin plug off.

My reply was
I think the adaptor may be faulty, it should be outputting 5 Volts DC
I then said you should test the USB connector on your satnav eg.
in order to test the 2595's USB input you can connect a USB cable from your unit directly to a USB connector on a computer or a mains to USB power unit, they will both supply 5 Volts DC to your satnav

Did you do this test ?

Where on earth did you get the idea I would even think of cutting the plug off.

From this quote :-
the only way I know to connect 12v to the gps is to cut the plug off and locate the wires and connect 12v,
If you did not do this, then why did you say it ?

The strange thing is when when shining a light to the screen you can just see the shadow of the normal display behind, it's just not being backlit.
A probable cause for this is the application of a higher voltage (maybe 12 Volts ?) to the unit

I know it's a 5v unit, I incorrectly thought you were suggesting I had applied 12v to the unit. The above was mentioning how difficult it would be and would blow up the gps.

The external 12v was only ever applied to the cigarette adapter.

Your suggestion was to power the unit with USB cable and this resulted in shutting the display down and lite up when unplugging the cable. Doing this in a brightly lite room enabled me to see the dim display enabling me to enter settings and adjust the brilliance to a normal level. I've concluded this must have happened when recently updated the charts and hadn't used the unit since. Now operates normally,
Thanks for your help.
