GlobalSat BU 353 S4 usb GPS Sirf 4 what software

I hope someone here can give me a bit of a rundown on how these addon gps gadgets such as GlobalSat BU 353 S4 usb GPS Sirf 4, work. The adds never seem to mention any software that comes with them but there must be something to allow the unit readings and signals to be expressed on the screen.

I want to use my Toshiba 305 notebook like one might use a gamin handheld or auto mounted gps unit... for the size and readability. It appears I could plug in a unit like mentioned and get with it on a 12 by 8 screen, but I'm not finding enough about the actual workings of such a setup to be sure what it would be like using one.

Is there sophisticated software available that will make the usb unit deliver things similar to a garmin or tom tom etc?
