just wondering if there is any way
using the various online mapping websites
to show / calc just the straight line distance
    between two points -

In Google Maps Labs, there's a 'Distance Measurement Tool'. Enable it
("New" link, or maybe the gear icon), then click on the Distance
measurement tool icon in the lower left corner, next to the distance
    scale.

If you need to know the straight line distance between 2 points use Google
Earth. Tools menu choose ruler and I am sure you can figure it out from
    there. It works great.
