You can update Garmin maps, for units that were purchased with Lifetime map updates, using a computer program called Garmin Express, the program can be downloaded free of charge from Gamin website here :-

After Garmin products are registered with Garmin Express, they can use it to download and install maps onto both the GPS unit and your computer so that they can be used in Basecamp. It is also possible to back-up other files from your Garmin unit to your computer.
Garmin Express can also install updates for :- Operating System Software, Language / Voices, Vehicle icons etc.
Voices are downloadable with Garmin Express :- Tools & Contents >> Utilities >> Language files
Garmin Express User Guide (Note :- You can change product)
There is a release date history for City Navigator Maps here :-

Map Install Using Garmin Basecamp
Due to ever increasing map sizes (and units getting older) Garmin Express sometimes seems to struggle with map downloads, this can be due to insufficient memory on the unit or a split capacity on internal and microSD memory, many of these issues can be solved by using Garmin Basecamp installed on the same computer that Garmin Express is installed, the method is to use Garmin Express to download using the 'Computer only' option (Ensuring that Garmin Basecamp is installed on the computer first) See Fig 3 above, this has the advantage that the new map is downloaded to the computer's memory and displayed in Basecamp, you can select the map and view it using Basecamp, from here the next step is to select Maps >> Install Maps in the Basecamp, this will open the Mapinstall
FIG 5
Note :- You can select between Internal and MicroSD memory, you will then be presented with a screen displaying the maps currently installed and you are given options to Delete existing Maps and install new ones
Fig 6
The Green Memory indicator will show what effect removing of installing will have and I find removing maps and then re-entering the Mapinstall option is good way of making space on your unit, while Advanced / Partial will allow you to select a smaller area of the whole map if you have limited memory
