My Garmin hell ...... :-)

Hi,

I have a Garmin dezl 760LM and its fine ...... now as for Garmin's support and help and their software, its NOT so fine.
I have factory reset, hopped on one foot, and offered up things to Pegan god's and for whatever reason ........

I still have 7 little bastar* routes or something that WON'T GO AWAY on the unit from the internal memory.
They have custom names and a few default ones like ACTIVE LOG XXX, etc ......

It's driving my potty, I understand that you can't delete things from the internal storage in a garmin device without
factory resetting it, so I've done that twice and these little artifacts won't disappear! Any suggestions?

I did a back up before this last playtime so that's covered and I'm going to put in the memory card and continue to
clean up the waypoints in there on the card.

Hi Dave -- I’m reluctant to chime in here because 1) you’ve probably tried the simple things already, and 2) I don’t have a Dezl. I’ve recently had two DriveSmart units, and in the old days a Zumo, so there may be differences that make anything I would suggest not be useful. That said, your statement “you can't delete things from the internal storage in a Garmin device without factory resetting it” is not my experience.

I can easily connect my unit to my computer and delete files as needed. The connecting cord that is used normally when using your GPS probably won’t work as a data cord if it has a “lump” built into it (I think that’s related to traffic info). I use a simple phone charging cord as my data connection and it works fine. Once connected, you can use File Manager (on a PC, probably called something different on a Mac) to view the file structure. I go to <Device Name> / Internal Storage / GPX and in that folder is where the POI and route data is stored, there may be multiple GPX files there. You can try deleting the files that bother you, or even all the files in there, or you can just delete the “GPX” folder itself, your device I believe should recreate that as it needs to. This may get rid of stuff you don’t want.

Again, this works for me, can’t vouch for Dezl’s… Good luck.
 
Yea I've plugged it in before and seen the file structure but can't find where in the DEZL model - the folder with the right data.

But what the heck I'll go drop it back on the PC and have another gander at it ! - thanks for the suggestion !

Make sure you take a copy of whatever it is you want to delete before deleting it.
Just in case they are required system files so you can restore them to the original location if needed.
Anything named ACTIVE LOG is possibly the file that stores the current trip data or currently recording track log (breadcrumb trail), the extras may be archives of this you're seeing.
I've never used a Dezl though Montana's & others I have used allow the user to set the current recording track to archive at certain times, like daily, weekly or when full.

Where do you see these files that are annoying you?
What are they named, and if you can find them on the device via plugging in to the computer, what is the location they are stored in?
 
If you are desperate, please be aware that you can plug your GPS device into a Windows computer (maybe others) and it can look like any memory device (like a USB flash drive). So you can explore its memory, and maybe even apply Search to it. If you find those files, you can delete them. But, there is a possibility that they aren't in user space but in system space. In that case, deleting them could render your device unusable. See if your device has a "factory reset" function before you try my suggestion! I know nothing of the internal software of Garmin, but I do know my Drive 52 is very poorly programmed--I have many problems using it.
