Questions about purchasing first hand held GPS unit

  1. Folks, I'm sure you have received this questions thousands of times,
but I was wondering if someone might be willing to share their advice
concerning the purchase of a handheld GPS unit. I have used Delorme's
earthmate (little yellow box) GPS unit in the car with an old laptop
for some time now, but would like a reliable, waterproof unit to carry
with me hiking and camping in the woods. Ideally, I would like to be
able to hook it up to my PC as well as Palm VX (via serial, RS232
cable)download maps to it, and a good color display would be nice. Is
good mapping software available for it?
Also, I have had trouble when using the earthmate under trees, and
would like a unit that would be sensitive and reliable. Any help is
GREATLY appreciated, please reply and if you know of where such a unit
and mapping software could be purchased at a good price, I would
really appreciate it as well. Thanks so much in advance, and please
    reply to
    . Thanks again!
