I downloaded 2016 map file, put it on a formatted sd card, inserted it into the slot, and the gps won't read it! I have 2 identical units and 2 sd cards, and have same issue on both. What am i not doing? Any ideas?

It would help if you supplied some more detail, here are a few questions :-

1) What is the name and size of the file you downloaded ?
2) If you have an original (working) SD card, does it have a file structure like 12-34567-00/GARMIN/gmapsupp.img ?
3) Have you successfully installed downloaded maps onto the c500 in the past?
