TomTom better than Garmin at finding addresses in 15k size town?

    My son is a delivery driver so he decided to try Garmin Nuvi 50LM for his GPS and it's been a frustrating experience so far. Background: Town of about 15k with a pretty poor grid system for their streets and some new subdivisions/roads. We updated the maps hoping that would improve things, but still several of his addresses give him grief each night.


    Would he be better off with a TomTom?

    What about Open Source 3rd party maps?

    You are really comparing Garmin maps with Tomtom maps because the units would perform exactly the same when using the same map, Garmin uses Navteq maps (now called HERE), while Tomtom uses TeleAtlas, I have read that Garmin is better in the USA and Tomtom is better in Europe but that is a generalisation that very difficult to prove

    As far as 3rd party maps go, in my experience they usually don't have built-in address lookup facilities at all, or they may be limited to post code / zip code lookup but not an index of street names, at least Garmin can use 3rd party maps, Tomtom doesn't as far as I know

    It looked like OpenStreetMap has addresses being mapped regularly. But I have NO experience using it on a GPS unit.

    3rd. Party maps may display road names but that doesn't necessarily mean you can search on them, here is a comparison :-

    CITY NAVIGATOR EUROPE
    Where To >> Address >> Spell Town or Postcode
    Spell Town - Coventry = Coventry displayed

    OPEN STREET MAP
    Where To >> Address >> Spell Town or No Postcode
    Spell Town - Coventry = No Match Found

    TALKY TOASTER
    Where To >> Address >> Map Data Not Available
