Why are Garmin road maps HUGE and so cut up by region?

My last GPS was a Tom Tom back 10 years or so ago and it had every road in the U.S that I ever needed in it already. The directions were a circuitous maze, but were ultimately spot on and every improved road was there.

Now I look for road maps and they're regionally diced up. OK, I know more roads were made in the last 10 years but not THAT many?

So, are there any road maps that I can use for decent directions if I were taking a trip from say Miami to Salt lake city?

I suspect you are looking at topo maps intended for hiking / walking etc, satnavs ( for driving ), are usually supplied with full USA map coverage already installed, these maps concentrate mainly on 'road' features, so they can be smaller than the topo equivalent
