    Hello all,

I've done some searching here and on the web but haven't found specifically what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for an application, Mac or PC based is fine, that will batch rename all my waypoints for a specific route. For example I have a trip coming up to take the train to Washington DC from close to my residents and it has over 600 way points in it. What I would like is instead of the generic name that GPS Visualizer gives them to something like ARR#### (A for Amtrak, RR for route number and #### for an incremented number).

    Does such an application exist?

    Thank you for your help

If you can convert a GPX file containing your waypoints to CSV (Comma Seperated Variable) format you can use Microsoft Excel to convert a block of text into a new format :-

    rename1.jpg

Above is a screen capture of a CSV file loaded into Excel, the 20 names were auto named by Garmin Basecamp

    rename2.jpg

I changed the first two 'Names' to a string of letters and numbers ending in '000' and '001'

    rename3.jpg
By highlighting the first two 'Names' and then dragging the box from the bottom right corner to cover all 20 (or 600 in your case), it is possible to get Excel to replace the text and auto number each Name as above

Hi all - Following the instructions in this thread, I had an issue converting the CSV back into a GPX file that Basecamp would import (gave an error).

Any ideas for a fix would be appreciated.

The steps I used were :-
    1. In Basecamp highlight all waypoints you want to re-name
    2. File >> Export Selection to *.GPX file
    3. Using gpsbabel convert input.gpx using format = GPX XML into output.csv using format = comma separated values
    4. In Excel edit names as detailed in post #2 above
    5. Save Excel edited data using save as type = CSV
    6. Using gpsbabel convert excel.csv input file using format = comma separated values into excel.gpx output file using format = GPX XML
    7. Open Excel.gpx file in Basecamp to show waypoints with new names
