Any files downloaded from Garmin Basecamp to the unit's SD-card will in Gmapsupp.img format, please note this will over-write any existing Gmapsupp.img file, so backup existing files first

It depends what you are tying to update and where the original maps came from, you can download Open Street Map Files that are already in the Gmapsupp.img format for free, these files (after unzipping), can be written directly to a MicroSD card and placed into a unit such as the Garmin 64s, have a look at the link here :-

If you want other maps or want to create your own maps from scratch, you would need to create or obtain maps in a format that can be installed into Garmin Basecamp and then written to a Garmin unit in Gmapsupp.img format

can you take a downloaded OSM map in Gmapsupp.img format and copy it into the memory of a 64s and will it read it.

that would leave the microSD slot free for another map.
