I have an old Garmin Pilot 3 which works fine, but after about 1 hour use it goes to blank screen. If I immediately switch it on again, it boots up again but previous trace/location etc has gone from the screen so I have to re-enter "go to" instruction. It operates from an external 12V supply with own AA batteries (new) also fitted. Is this a symptom of faulty internal Garmin battery ? Or maybe a bad connection to the AA batteries ??

Yes, the internal battery could be the problem, it is reproted as being a VL1220, there are some instuctions on replement here :

Many thanks for your help/advice. I'll see if I can get a replacement internal battery fitted. Fingers crossed !
