iPhone GPS app that shows GPS sat position, status, etc?

I've been searching for an iPhone app that gives out the iPhone GPS
receiver data for each satellite tracked. I haven't found anything to
date. Bonus for one that records selected fields from each satellite as
well as receiver state.

If (this is the part I don't know) an iPhone can run arbitrary Java
applets, GPSMid can probably do most of what you're looking for. You
have to be wiling to do a bit of fiddling to get it going. It uses Open
Street Map data and features a moving-map display.

You have not found anything, because it's not possible to access to
the data you want from the apple APIs in iOS.
(This is what a developer told me... so I did not checked directly)
So, it's not possible to write a program that shows the detailed GPS
status (as far I know... and the fact that there are no programs able
to do... seems a to confirm the theory )

Thanks, but that's not at all what I'm interested in.

The program you refer to is just another navigator (I have 3 free GPS
and 3 paid for GPS Apps on my iPhone ... and that number is likely to go
up).

I really want the data on the _satellites_ and the receiver channel data.

Two words: export restrictions

My guess is that GPS developers are so afraid of falling afoul of the
export restrictions that they don't provide anything that can be used to
reconstruct the raw, uncensored 3-space velocity and position.

They are very anti-hobbist, anti-i-want-to-do-it-my-way.
Apple makes their stuff very, very easy to use for the non-technical
users.
But when it comes down to re-using the available resources in a
different way, good luck.
A writable DVD is only good to record a movie, but not for data
backup, is one example that comes in mind.
And even that's 2nd hand opinions. I have never owned anything from
apple. Probably never will. Hardcore linux user (for everything).
Plus there's the DRM thing witch I hate (a lot).

Huh? You clearly are completely clueless about things Apple.
What do you think that yellow/black cicle (labeled Burn)
in the Finder toolbar is for? Never seen it?

Apple are far from perfect in my eye, but they blow away Linux on any day.

Why they should be afraid of doing something that any cheap receiver
can do?
Without any sort of restriction, of course.
The iOS simply does not offer APIs for the data on the satellites. So
the developer cannot access or use it, in any way.

you run your apps. I have mentioned in the other GPS NG that I have
been putting my iPhone in a ram-mount holder right behind the steering
wheel. When the sun shines in, the unit heats up and the iPhone shuts
off the backlight which makes reading the apps nearly impossible.

I have checked with Apple (who gave me a 2nd iphone which I confirmed
this with) and many vendors and they tell me this is not a common
problem or something people complain about. I have also looked for
fan cooled cases and have only found one which only works nearly the
lighter.

You could try to buy a mount that can be insertend into the air vents.
You iphone will be placed in front of a vent and you can use some of
the air to cool the phone.
Of course, this is not going to work is you use hot air in winter!

Never heard about this problem. I have an iphone 3g (I use it in car)
and I have several friends with 3gs and iphone 4.

I have the old version of this program. The author has been upgrading
it. Just ask him for what you need.

The old version works fine on my Blackberry. I don't think the Very
Reverend Steve Jobs allows java apps on his holy Jesus phone.
