Is there a way to remove a permanent Garmin dashboard mount?

I screwed up and put a permanent mount on my dashboard when I mean to
use the temporary one. Duh. Does anyone know how to get it off without
ruining the dashboard?

It is bad to remove some holes in you dashboard when you screwed up. I would
prefer some solutions without making holes in the dashboard like installing
a cellphone holder.

I didn't put holes in my dashboad. Gamin doesn't ask you to put holes
in your dashboard. This is the permanent adhesive pad. Is there a way
to remove it?

I would try squirting some WD-40 under the mount, every couple of days for a
week or so, then thoroughly heating the base with a hairdryer, while pulling
at an angle. Other more aggressive solvents are likely to damage the
dashboard vinyl, but WD-40 definitely won't.

Another thing to try: plain mineral oil. It shouldn't discolor or ruin
your dash and is pretty good at dissolving adhesives. I haven't tried it
on the Garmin pads, but I suspect it will get the job done.

We peeled ours off as well as we could, then used mineral spirits. Can't
tell it was there now. I should have gotten the beanbag in the first place.

You might try heating it with a hair dryer first before applying any
chemicals. Usually when the glue gets warm it will peel off.....

Given the temperature (US) car dashboards reach, in the sun, I seriously
doubt that will work. If it does Garmin would be in a lot of trouble.
I'd try the oil someone suggested .. any solvents that'd take off the
glue will probably spoil the dashboard finish too, depending on what it
is (wood? Vinyl? ABS?). (Serious) Freezing might work, but again, the
dashboard finish is at risk.

I would second this suggestion. Both WD-40 and mild heat are very
effective on most adhesives.

Knowing the type of adhesive would help, of course. But the above,
with patience, will most likely get the job done.

When done, soap will remove the WD-40.

I specifically asked what to use removing the adhesive when I bought
mine at REI. Not sure the salesman was right, and I don't think he was
either, but he suggested rubbing or denatured alcohol.

I've successfully removed two Garmin permanent mounts with no visible
marks whatsoever by the following process:

Get a large flat-bladed metal kitchen spatula - the sort you use for
flipping burgers or whatever - basically, a flat sheet of thin steel.
Gently push this into the gap between the mount and the dash - the
thickness of the adhesive disk prevents the mount and the dash being
too close together for this.

Gently ease the blade into the gap, rocking it from side to side
slightly - you need to use a constant, steady pressure rather than
jabbing it hard! On both occasions I've tried this, the glue has
separated cleanly from either the dash or the maount, and you can just
peel any remaining glue off with your fingers.

Second hand info;
Use a nylon fishing line to separate the mount from the dash then use
a citrus based solvent to disolve the glue.

You should end up with an unmarked dash altho the colour may be a
little darker than the surrounding area if it has been on for some
time.

I have removed one using piano wire [actually a guitar string] to cut through
the disk and then used a product called 'un-du' adhesive remover [available at
china/houseware stores] to do away with the remaining gunk. But that was one
that was on for a while. If it was a recent apply, firm steady angled prying
may be enough to break it loose.
 
Interesting and relevant side note...after I mounted my SPIII using the
gunk, one day I left the car with the sun baking the windshield. Coming back
to the car, my wife said "Someone stole the GPS!" When we got into the car,
we found the GPS on the floor, having succumbed to heat and gravity and
having left behind a snail-trail of disgusting goo.

I suspect that you used the "temporary" adhesive pad rather than
the "permanent" one.
 
removal of the adhesive

Hi, try Goo Gone, it works perfectly. I bought it at Home Depot Foe $6.50. just spray on the glued surfaces, esp the edges, let it sit for like 1 min, and use a dull object (so it won't scratch the dashboard) to pick up the edge and pull it up, you might need to do this slowly and repeatedly, but it cleans very well, too. use a glove to protect your hands. After that, just use warm (soap) water to wipe clean the rest.

Goo Gone, it works!:)
